SPEAKER: Shantal Der Beghosian, Shakar Bakery
Shantal Der Boghosian has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from UCSB, and a Masters of Science in Environmental Engineering from UCLA. Her extensive scientific background has led her to work at highly touted companies such as 3M Pharmaceuticals, Medtronic Minimed and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Shantal founded Shakar Bakery in 2009 after graduating with her masters degree and finding herself unemployed during the economic crisis. Unable to find a job, she decided to create one! Shantal continued growing her business while working as a materials engineer at Lockheed Martin, and as time went on she realized her heart was more aligned with entrepreneurship and she decided to focus on her company full time.
Since then, Shantal has focused on incorporating her engineering background into her business in creative ways! One of the most unique projects she has designed was a 5 foot animatronic cake as a tribute to the French duo, Daft Punk. The animatronic portion was found in the edible helmets and with the help of a computer engineer, Shantal was able to bring the design to life and even capture the attention of Daft Punk! The cake was blogged into several reputable engineering blogs as well as cake magazines! Recently, Shakar Bakery was selected to bake for a television episode of celebrity event planner, David Tutera. Come see Shantal discuss her journey as an entrepreneur and to see how science and engineering can be tied into a cake business!
