Presentation Abstract:

Toray’s Role In The Evolution Of Next Generation Carbon Fiber And Prepreg Materials

This presentation will discuss the evolution of PAN based carbon fibers and carbon fiber prepreg materials from their beginnings in the 1950’s to the next generation materials produced today.  We will review the developments that led to the first commercial PAN based carbon fibers and follow the progression through today’s new IM + fibers and prepreg systems used in large scale commerical airframes and defense applications.

Jeff Cross Bio

Jeff has nearly 30 years experience in aerospace composite manufacturing and materials processing.  Jeff started his career in 1988 with Bell Helicopter working in MR&D focused on innovative tooling and manufacturing process required for composite fabrication.  After Bell, Jeff led the Advanced Development Group at Rockwell International, this group was responsible for many DoD prototype projects such as the Tier II Global Hawk wing design and build, NASP composite cryo tanks and titanium matrix composite structures.

Jeff joined Ciba Geigy in the early 2000’s as an application engineer and moved into a technical sales role primarily concentrated in aerospace tooling, infusion/RTM resins and processes for structural components.

Jeff is currently Director of Business Development (Aerospace), Toray Composite Materials America (CMA).  Toray’s global manufacturing base produces a diverse range of high performance carbon fibers and prepreg materials used for primary structures in aerospace, automotive and industrial applications.
